Brian Cutler, Ph.D.
University Professor | Consultant | Expert Witness
My professional goal is to educate students, professionals, and members of the public about scientific psychological research on legal issues, such as eyewitness identification and false confession.
I earned a doctorate degree in social psychology in 1987 and have been conducting psychological research on legal issues continuously since 1983. I have been fortunate to have had tenured faculty positions at two universities in the U.S. and one in Canada. My primary residence is in Oshawa, Ontario, where I continue my work as Professor, and I live part-time in Old Lyme, Connecticut.
Psychological Research on Eyewitness Memory
Scientific psychological research on eyewitness memory grew out of cognitive psychological research on perception and memory and social psychological research on social influence. Some of the earliest research on eyewitness memory was conducted more than 100 years ago. Interest in research on eyewitness identification gained momentum with the growing realization that many wrongfully convicted individuals were mistakenly identified by confident – but incorrect – eyewitnesses.
Scientific psychological research on eyewitness memory grew out of social psychological research on social influence. The study of confessions began to develop in the 1980s. Interest in research on confessions and interrogations gained momentum with the growing realization that many wrongfully convicted individuals had confessed to crimes they did not commit.
Most of my writing has been for peer-viewed psychology journals; however, I have also made it a priority to author and edit books on forensic psychological topics. Some of my books are co-authored by myself and other scholars, meaning that we wrote all the content. Others are edited or co-edited, meaning that I (or we) planned the structure and content, worked with the publisher, and invited other experts in the field to contribute chapters (along with ourselves).
